Imagine... Learn... Believe... that you have the opportunity to experience the life of the Northern Resident Orca Killer Whales. We have the privilege to offer you the experience of some of the most spectacular whale watching and wildlife tours in the world. Experience the feeling of wonder and connection as they pass by our boat, while listening to the sounds of their calls through our underwater microphones. Be a witness to one of the wonders of the Northwest Coast.

Did you know...
  • Killer whales spend 95% of their lives under water and largely out of human sight
  • Adult Males: grow up to 9.5m and weigh 8000-9000kg
  • Adult Females: grow up to 6m and weigh 5000-8000kg
  • The need to eat 4% of their body weight/day
  • If an orca weights 9000kgs it needs to eat 360kg of salmon per day.
  • They get their water from the food they eat, yes, that means blood.
Orca
And their colour...
  • Just as military airplanes are colored light on the undersides and dark on top during wartime, the colouring of killer whales makes them less visible from both above and below.
  • In the dark undersea world the whale's white areas also tend to create the illusion of much smaller objects, while the black body virtually disappears in the darkness - allowing the whale to visually appear to be much less of a threat than it actually is.
Why do they often surface out of the water at the same time?
  • The social dimension of synchronized breathing is most apparent in mothers and calves - from birth the mother enters a intimate respiratory relationship with her newborn calf and their blows will continue to be tightly linked throughout their lives.
  • The degree of respiratory synchrony between individuals and groups seems to be correlated with the degree of biological kinship between them.

Journey... Nature... Energy... We are going to take you where ocean water boils and whirlpools build into a saltwater river of wonder. Join us for a close up experience with the amazing Ocean Rapids at Seymour Narrows, Okissolo, Hole In the Wall, Yaculta and Arran Rapids. Follow the tide as it rushes between the Discovery Islands on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Here the water surges and boils on its journey inland producing some of the worlds fastest tidal waters.
  • natural occurring phenomena
  • ocean currents of up to 15.5 kts (18 miles / hr)
  • these currents made early water travel in the area treacherous
  • many areas are still impassable by larger vessels
  • Common terms we use: - Tide Rip / Boils / Whirl Pool / Standing Waves / Devil's Hole / The Drain / Kissed by Okissolo

Winter is coming soon, we are preparing for the cold Time but we still have the hot Vancouver Island summer in our minds ! It was just a great time on your Beautiful Island, and once again Thanks a lot for everything you shared with us. We really loved it J !

The amazing – Zodiac Day

What a great Ocean Rapids trip everyone had yesterday! Our guide, Erin, was awesome! You can't believe how great it was that our Spanish students could experience this and even better that we had Erin's experience and know how to allow us the opportunity to see black bear, dolphins, harbour seals, sea lions and more.

A trip of a live time for most of them!

Jen,
Whales, Dolphins, Bears, Great Lunch (minus the carrot cake), Seals, Eagles, Tidal Rapids and a Ride Home that surpassed anything Disney has to offer...we truly felt that you went above and beyond to make the day special...despite the fact you wouldn't take credit for the dolphins or the gorgeous weather! Even though we live in the Comox Valley we never tire of proving that Vancouver Island is Paradise! Our Swiss friends will be taking home some phenomenal memories and Britt (my 22 year old daughter) stated emphatically it was the highlight of her summer. Thank you again for the awesome day.
